The Dutch are patriotic and proud of their country. Many Dutch are taught to practice verdraagzaamheid, or tolerance. This means respecting people’s freedom of choice and beliefs. This attitude is visible in Amsterdam, which is generally progressive on social stances, such as LGBTQIA+ rights, euthanasia, cannabis laws, and freedom of speech.

Cycling is a major part of life in Amsterdam. Bicycles have right of way in Amsterdam and cyclists are very accustomed to their presence on the roads. When crossing the street, always look out for cyclists, and avoid stepping into designated bike lanes when walking or waiting at traffic lights.
Tipping is not mandatory, but it is appreciated for good service. In restaurants, it's common to leave 5-10% of the bill if the service is good, though many places include service charges. In cafes and bars, rounding up the bill or leaving small change is a typical gesture of appreciation.
The Dutch are very eco-conscious, and recycling is taken seriously. Amsterdam has a well-organized waste management system. Be sure to separate your waste into the correct bins (paper, plastic, glass and general waste).
