Apply for the EF One World Scholarship

Through engagement with new cultures and global communities, students who travel abroad are prompted to reflect on their own experiences and examine their unique identities. The EF One World Scholarship offers $1,000–$5,000 scholarships (dependent on program type) that enable more students to get out there, explore who they are, and discover what they're capable of.

Short-term faculty-led scholarship: $1,000

To be considered, applicants must:

  • Be enrolled on a short-term, faculty-led EF Study Abroad program

  • Be currently enrolled as a graduate student at a U.S. institution of higher education AND/OR not be receiving credit for their EF program at their home institution

Semester scholarship: $5,000

To be considered, applicants must:

  • Be enrolled on a EF Study Abroad semester program

1. Letter of recommendation

Ask an educator (a professor, administrator, or teacher, for example) to write a letter that paints a holistic view of you as an individual and as a student while speaking to your character, passion, drive, and reasons why you deserve this scholarship. The letter should be about 250 to 500 words. Applicants must upload their nomination letter with their application in the form of a PDF. The letter must be on institutional letterhead and be signed by the nominator (electronic signatures are acceptable).

Below are some suggestions of topics to include if the educator writing your recommendation is looking for inspiration:

  • Your passion or connection to your identity

  • Your personal qualities

  • Your academic strengths, interests, and pursuits

  • Reasons why you deserve an EF scholarship

Please provide the first name, last name, and email address of the educator who has written your recommendation for verification purposes.

2. Essay reflection

Describe how your lived experience and your identity have impacted your desire to study abroad. (250–500 words).

For this scholarship, we are considering applicants who identify with communities that are historically marginalized or underrepresented in study abroad, in areas including but not limited to: race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, veteran status, first generation status, and disability. Applications will be scored in the following categories, with 1–4 points awarded in each category: 

  • Applicant’s ability to compellingly express the impact of their lived experience and identity on their desire to study abroad 

  • Applicant's desire to expand their global perspective and cultural knowledge 

  • Demonstration of passion and character, connection to identity, and personal qualities, as indicated in the letter of recommendation

  • Professor's assessment of why this student deserves a scholarship, as indicated in the letter of recommendation

Semester Programs:

  • Fall Semester: April 1

  • Spring Semester: October 1

Faculty-Led Programs:

  • J-Term & Spring Semester: October 1

  • Summer Semester: February 1
