Global Culture & Society in London

Spend a semester immersing yourself in the vibrant, multicultural city of London. Explore your academic interests at Queen Mary University, where you’ll have the freedom to enroll in a diverse range of courses, and round out your course load with an EF-led intercultural communication class. In between enjoying all London has to offer and visiting dynamic cities like Edinburgh and Amsterdam, you’ll gain a better understanding of your own strengths, passions, and potential.

EF Coursework

Our EF Study Center in London sits at heart of the Waterloo area close to famous landmarks like the London Eye. Here, you’ll complete an EF-led course focused on real-world skills. 

3 CREDITS

During this EF-led course, students will examine their place in the world as they explore what matters to them, what they believe in, and what they want to achieve. Through reflection and engagement with their peers and the local community, students will learn to work through differences to address challenges related to the economy, environment, politics, education, technology, and society.

3 CREDITS

This course introduces encounters between civilizations, cultures, and societies in world history based on examples from the medieval, early modern, and modern periods. Throughout the semester, students will seek to develop an understanding of patterns in world history.

3 CREDITS

While introducing students to central themes in sociology, this course explores how our individual lives are connected to global developments such as climate change, migration, and technology. Students will also examine the ways class, gender, race, identity, and religion organize relations in an era of globalization.

In this course, students will dive into the most adaptable and global of literary forms: the short story. Students will study stories from diverse cultures and traditions around the world, including Asia, Europe, and the Americas, to explore the idea of “world literature” and some of the debates surrounding it.

Explore the fundamentals of the disciplines of Politics and International Relations by learning how to formulate research interests, questions, and projects. Unpack the real-world impact that this research has by researching political issues that impact East London communities.

Using a critical geographical framework, unpack issues like climate change, waste population change, and social & environmental justice. Learn about recent efforts to decolonize geography through classwork and a field trip to the Royal Geographical Society.

Program excursions

These group excursions allow you to explore different regions and gain deeper insights into your host country through guided exploration and cultural immersion.

Experience another part of the United Kingdom as you travel north to Scotland. Explore the country’s unique history, culture, and politics as you stroll through Edinburgh’s old town and visit the Scottish Parliament. Then, journey into the Scottish Highlands to experience the area’s idyllic natural environment and fabled lochs.   

Cross the channel to the Netherlands where you’ll explore the city’s history and modern culture as you do activities like exploring post-modern art at local museums and participating in a guided experience at the Anne Frank House. Spend time exploring the city of Amsterdam independently as you stroll along the canals and take in the city’s rich culture. 

Throughout the semester, connect your curriculum to the world around you alongside local experts during immersive field visits, such as a hands-on painting class in the artsy Shoreditch area and a visit to the historic British Museum.

Student applicant requirements

Students interested in embarking on an EF Foundation Program must be at least 18 years old, hold a U.S. passport, maintain a 2.5 GPA minimum, and be a high school graduate by departure day in order to apply.
